Unhinged

I'm drawn to appropriation art — incorporating well-known, older masterpieces that feel like they belong to a different time and bringing them into the present. I use physical elements to give a classic image new meaning that people can relate to today.
For Unhinged, I used Courbet's public-domain 1843 self-portrait — a man gripping his hair in visible panic — and built a physical vocabulary around that panic. A loose screw. A falling hinge. A coiled spring, wound too tight. Unraveling mesh. Each element becomes a literal stand-in for what's happening inside him: coming apart, coming undone, barely holding together. An eye watches from above, representing the paranoia of always being seen — the pressure to stay composed regardless.
